Peter Frampton Apologizes for Walking Off Stage Sunday Night

Peter Frampton has apologized for what he called an "overreaction" to an incident with a camera operator during a concert Sunday night.

The legendary guitarist and songwriter was performing at the Treasure Island Casino in Red Wing, Minnesota, when he stopped the show after hearing loud cheers from the audience during a quiet moment in the song "I'll Give You Money."

After the first interruption, Frampton says he urged the director to use only shots of the band during that song. Then when it happened again, he tried to wrestle a camera away from a crew member before leaving the stage with his band, returning only once the big screens were turned off.

Frampton later learned the cheers were because of cutaways to a fan waving around some of his old albums.

"I was frustrated because I felt we had completely lost control of this special moment in the show," he explained in a Facebook post. "I overreacted and tried to take the camera from the cameraman and left the stage to talk to the director. I reacted passionately because I care very much about giving you the best show we can possibly give every night.

He explained that he and his band follow a "script" for every performance with "moments to go off musically."

He says distractions, like those Sunday, messed with "the build of the show." He also pointed out that, from the stage, the band can't see what's up on the screens.

"I feel very bad for [the fan] and totally understand the perception from out front at this point in the show."

The fan involved in the incident later told the Star Tribune that she regretted her role in the drama.

“I was merely holding my album cover at my chest using it as a fan, when I noticed my face on the big screen. I then held up my cover and the crowd cheered,” Sherry Tupa said.

She added that she had her LPs with her in hopes she would get them signed. The first one she was seen holding, Frampton Comes Alive, was the same one she says she got for Christmas when she was 11 years old.

Frampton's tour with Steve Miller Band continues through August 13. Get all the tour dates here.
