Billy Joel is the "Piano Man" but don't use elephants to make his keys.

The famous pianist came out in favor of a New York State bill that would ban the sale of ivory.

Ivory comes from the tusks of animals like elephants.  It a valuable item in many circles.  It has been used to make piano keys.

But, as Joel writes:

"I realize that ivory piano keys are preferred by some pianists. But a preference for ivory keys does not justify the slaughter of 96 elephants every day. There are other materials which can be substituted for piano keys. But magnificent creatures like these can never be replaced."

New York is apparently a "leading market in the world for illegal ivory sales," according to New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
